A Brief History

Joseph W. Martin, Jr. Elementary School was constructed in 1967 and named after the 44th United States Speaker of the House, Joseph W. Martin, Jr.

Congressman Martin was born and raised in North Attleborough. He attended North Attleborough High School in the building located on South Washington Street now called Community School. Later, he became a newspaper reporter, eventual owner and publisher of North Attleborough's Evening Chronicle (which after his death merged with another paper to become the Sun Chronicle), and civil servant through his work as a member of Massachusetts' House and Senate and Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

The original structure of Joseph W. Martin, Jr. Elementary School included the main office, the orange wing (grade 2 and 3 classrooms), the blue wing (grade 1 classrooms), and the cafetorium (cafeteria and auditorium) spaces. The cafetorium was also used as the school's gymnasium.

In 1995, the building expanded to what it is now Martin School. The addition includes the green wing (grade 4 and 5 classrooms), the purple wing (kindergarten classrooms), and our current gym, which is more than double the size of the original gym.
